How do we avoid "split nights" while bedsharing?

Morning, sleepy head. This is Cosleepy Dispatch #007, your field notes for the week of June 29, 2026.

What I've got for you this week:

  • ๐Ÿฅณ What to do when your baby wakes up during the night and wants to play
  • ๐Ÿ’ฌ How to handle being judged for cosleeping
  • ๐Ÿ“š The best book for contact naps that I've read so far this year
  • ๐Ÿ“ค An opportunity to give me feedback on how I'm doing!

Monday mornings can be hard, so I hope this dispatch helps you feel stronger and less alone. Grab a warm drink and start scrolling!

๐Ÿฅณ COSLEEPY Q&A

My baby wakes up and wants to play!

A cosleepy mom named Jessica emailed me last week about her 10-month-old who likes to practice new skills like sitting up and crawling in the middle of the night.

This is normal, but it can be frustrating when your normal back-to-sleep tool (like feeding) suddenly no longer works.

If this happens to you, here's what I want you to think about:

  • Reducing some of baby's daytime sleep. You can begin by capping their last nap of the day by 15 minutes, or you could push bedtime 15 minutes later than usual.
  • Is your family bedroom as distraction-free as possible? (Blackout shades and a pink nightlight near the bed help keep baby's focus on you!)
  • Do you need to practice new ways of helping your baby fall asleep?

Here's what I mean -- if feeding your baby no longer puts them to sleep instantly, consider some of these techniques shared by cosleepy parents. You may need to pivot.

P.S. A "split night" is the most extreme version of this, when your baby is awake for 1-3 hours during the night. ๐Ÿ˜ตโ€๐Ÿ’ซ My bedsharing guides include a chapter on what to adjust so this doesn't happen!

๐Ÿ’ฌ THE COMMENT SECTION

How do you handle being judged for cosleeping?

This week, โ€‹I asked the community how they handle being judged for cosleepingโ€‹. Do they ignore it? Or have a sarcastic come-back ready to go? (Or maybe they can't help but react the way I did, as a new mom, and they just burst into tears.)

Here are some responses that stood out to me:

  • @nurturedayandnight I handle it as an opportunity to give others permission to do the same!
  • @isabelacpcunha I give zero f***s ๐Ÿ™ƒ
  • @v.c.pasha I suggest they come by in the middle of the night to help put her back to sleep every few hours or so
  • @_morninglo Well, I just in my mind know what theyโ€™re missing out on ๐Ÿ’•
  • @d33lytful Stare at them blankly
  • @imagesoftokyo No one ever judged me. I live in Japan โค๏ธ
  • @leesh_26 I tell them about the safe sleep 7, how we follow those guidelines, and explain that as a single parent itโ€™s not realistic to get up every hour with my child when sheโ€™s in the bassinet, so cosleeping allows us both to get the rest we need.

I highly recommend scrolling through the comment section if this is something you're going through. You've got this.

๐Ÿ“š NAP-TRAPPED

My favorite book of 2026 (so far)

I mentioned this book a few weeks ago, when I was about halfway through. I really loved it! I can imagine Amazon or Netflix adapting it into a film.

It featured a lot of neighborhoods in LA that I miss, and it's so obviously written by someone who knows the magic of the city firsthand. Diverse cast of characters, great dialogue, sweet moments.

It also raises questions about fate, past lives, magic, and the unexpected path. I think it'll keep you good company on your afternoon contact naps. ๐Ÿค—

Morning, sleepy head. This is Cosleepy Dispatch #008, your field notes for the week of July 6, 2026. I am in crunch mode over here. My final draft is due to the publisher on July 20! I feel a lot of pressure to get everything perfectly right (can you imagine the level of scrutiny on a book about bedsharing? ๐Ÿ˜ฑ). But, for the first time, I'm also feeling a sense of relief. The finish line is finally in sight! I hope your week is the opposite -- light, un-rushed, go with the flow, and gentle on...
